'American Idol' Season 13 Finale Ratings Down 28% in Key Demo
Though the Fox competition does get a big jump week-to-week, it's still down double digits from last year's finale -- as the CBS show ends its spring run on an atypical Wednesday.
It was not the best week for signing competitions. After Tuesday night brought a low note for "The Voice" finale, American Idol also closed its season well south of last year.
Fast National ratings give the two-hour "American Idol" finale a 2.6 rating with adults 18-49 and 10.2 million viewers. In the key demographic, that's a 28 percent drop from last season. (It was, however, up 24 percent from last Wednesday's episode.)
The Fox show did manage to edge past "Survivor." The CBS competition, which has bested Idol on many occasions this season, ended its run with a 2.5 rating in the key demo and 9.5 million viewers. "Survivor" finales typically air on Sundays, and this one crept into the 10 p.m. hour -- where the reunion special averaged a 2.0 in the demo -- so ratings are subject to adjustment.
Wednesday's top dog was Modern Family. The ABC comedy averaged a 3.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 10.23 million viewers. The comedy was steady with its season ender last year -- though the lead-in did not service "Mixology" (1.3 adults) or the return of "Motive" (0.9 adults) at 10 p.m. The latter was off 25 percent from its premiere last year. At the top of the night, "The Middle" (2.0 adults) was up a tick from last week.
On NBC, "Revolution" (1.1 adults) wrapped its run on a low, if steady, note. "Law & Order: SVU" (1.6 adults) matched the previous week's score, while "Chicago P.D." (1.6 adults) inched up a tenth of a point.
