Mehldau and his trio of bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard open their covers-heavy new set with "Knives Out," the Obligatory Radiohead Song (evidently some sort of congressional legislation was recently passed requiring new-era jazzmen and classical musicians to cover the lads).

But, like the rest of "Day Is Done," its a reverent and partially zany refashioning that serves as a startlingly efficient showcase for Mehldau's skills. Just two originals here, and the rest of the speed-recorded album finds the trio digging into the Nick Drake title track, the Beatles two-shot of "Martha My Dear" and "She's Leaving Home" and a jaunty riff on "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover," all of which strike a nice balance between reverence and, well, irreverence. Throughout, Mehldau remains one of modern jazz's most consistently effective rock upgraders.
