My Chemical Romance, Death Cab For Cutie, Muse and Green Day were among the artists who took home an mtvU Woodie awards last night (Nov. 2) at New York's Roseland Ballroom. Winners for the second-annual ceremony were selected by college students across the country.
Highlights from the evening will premiere Nov. 10 on mtvU and a day earlier on the channel's broadband network, Uber, via MTVu.com.
My Chemical Romance, who video'd in its acceptance speech, was awarded Woodie of the year (artists of the year), beating out Common, Arcade Fire, Gorillaz and Fall Out Boy.
Other big winners included Motion City Soundtrack, who won best emerging artist ("The Breaking Woodie"); Death Cab For Cutie's "Title & Registration" for best video Woodie: live action); Green Day for the alumni Woodie ("The You're Still OK in Our Book Award"); and Muse for international Woodie.
Absent from the winners circle was Montreal's Arcade Fire, who was nominated in a leading five of the ten categories.
Veteran rocker Lou Reed and actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman made surprise appearances early in the show, the latter introducing a performance by the Go! Team. Rapper Matisyahu performed three songs, including a collaboration with Saul Williams on the latter's "Black Stacey." Little Brother and Death Cab For Cutie also played.
Aesop Rock, RZA and members of mewithoutYou (who won best emerging artist honors this year) and Coheed & Cambria were paired with college students to present the awards. To conjure a college mood, an a cappella group and step crew comprised of students from various universities also performed.
Organizers worked hard to keep the ceremony fairly "unceremonial," likening it to a party rather than an awards gala. "We wanted this to be first and foremost about the music," mtvU general manager Stephen Friedman tells Billboard.com. "We spend less time on speeches and details of the awards. Instead, we celebrate what college kids love more -- the music and the artists."
