The 2014 series begins June 3 with rapper Ty Dolla $ign and closes on Aug. 24 with the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival.
Ty Dolla $ign, Andrew Bird & the Hands of Glory, Passenger, Dr. John & the Night Trippers and Blood Orange are among the acts confirmed to play free shows as part of this year’s SummerStage, held throughout 14 parks in New York’s five boroughs between June and August.
The 2014 series begins June 3 with rapper Ty Dolla $ign at Red Hook Park in Brooklyn and closes Aug. 24 with the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in Manhattan’s Tompkins Square Park.
This year’s series, organized by the City Parks Foundation, will boast more than 100 free performances. Other notable free shows during SummerStage 2014 include Ana Tijoux (July 9), Sisqó (June 11), Cibo Matto (July 13), Mobb Deep (July 17) and Joe (Aug. 12).
On July 21 at Central Park, numerous artists will pay tribute to late folk legend Pete Seeger, who died earlier this year. The evening will include sets by Steve Earle, Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion, Amanda Palmer, Rusted Root’s Michael Glabicki, Anti-Flag (acoustic) and the Chapin Sisters.
Additionally, SummerStage is partnering with FANIA to celebrate the label’s 50th anniversary. During the season, such artists as Roberto Roena, Joe Bataan, Ismael Miranda, Tijoux and La Mecánica Popular will perform in various locations across the five Burroughs.
SummerStage also boasts an all-star lineup of benefit concerts, for which paid admission is required. They include Counting Crows (June 30), Beck (July 1), Neon Trees (July 7), Conor Oberst (July 29) and Fania All Stars (Aug. 24).
