Nirvana on Fallon
NBC

On the eve of Nirvana's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, surviving membersDave Grohl and Krist Novoselic took the couch on NBC's Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death. Acknowledging the "bittersweet" honor, said Novoselic: "our friend Kurt has been gone for 20 years ... he should be here."

Host Jimmy Fallon, clearly sensitive to the still-raw loss, let loose his inner fan, admitting to playing along to Nirvana's Unplugged album because he "was obsessed."

Recalling some of the band's milestone moments, Dave Grohl described playing in front of 350,000 people in Rio. Conversely, he recounted how the band was still touring in a van with a U-Haul trailer when the three received their first gold record for "Nevermind."

In addition to being panel guests, Grohl and Novoselic helped introduce a performance by Stevie Nicks and Fallon (as Tom Petty) playing the classic Petty-Nicks duet "Stop Dragging My Heart Around."

For the official Rock Hall festivities, taking place on Thursday at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, Joan Jett is expected to join the surviving Nirvana members along with other surprise guests.
