The 28-year old guard is suffering brain hemorrhaging after being trampled by a mob who broke down a fence and forcibly entered festival grounds last night
28-year old security guard Erica Mack is in "extremely critical" condition at Miami's Jackson Memorial hospital after being trampled by unruly gate crashers at Ultra Music Festival last night (March 28).
According to the Miami Herald, the Contemporary Services Corporation guard is suffering from severe brain hemorrhaging and a broken leg, in "critical, yet stable" condition.
Mack was overseeing a walkway near Southeast First Street and Biscayne Boulevard between 9:30 and 10 p.m. last night, when a mob of unruly fans forced their way into the premises without paying, by pushing down a chain link fence.
"She was doing what she was supposed to do, telling them to stop," Miami Fire-Rescue spokesman Lt. Ignatius Carroll told the Miami New Times. "When they pushed it down and it fell on top of her... They just trampled her."
First responders found Mack on the ground, screaming in pain, with blood flowing from her ears. Her condition worsened en route to the hospital, before stabilizing once she was treated.
The disturbing incident could have been prevented; just hours before Mack was trampled, police inspectors called for reinforcements to the portion of fence she was patrolling. Nothing was done. This particular vicinity was fortified with only chain link fence, when most other areas were reinforced with sturdier, unclimbable fencing.
Miami's homicide unit is searching for witnesses, hoping to track down members of the mob that trampled the 28-year old guard. So far, no arrests have been made in this particular case, although a Miami Police press release reports that 22 people have been arrested so far during Ultra.
City leaders are already calling for the end of Miami's Ultra Music Festival. "I think we should not have Ultra next year here," Miami mayor Tomas Regalado told the Miami Herald today. "This incident should never have happened." He also noted the festival organizers "acted irresponsibly" by failing to provide sufficient security.
Ultra Music Festival continues to go on as scheduled.
