After a nearly two-decade wait, T Bone Burnett has confirmed dates for a U.S. tour. The 16-date theater run will open May 23 in Chicago with Wallflowers frontman Jakob Dylan tapped to support all but one show. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's Peter Hayes and Robert Levon Been will open for Burnett June 15 at the second of two shows in San Francisco.

"It's been 20 years since I've gone on the road with a band," Burnett recently told Billboard. "It feels like heaven to get on a bus like Buddy Rich or Count Basie. You create your own bubble and move around the country in your own reality. It's a completely irresponsible place to be."

The tour comes in support of his first album in 14 years, "The True False Identity," and a two-disc retrospective, "Twenty Twenty: The Essential T Bone Burnett," both due May 16 from DMZ/Columbia. Burnett's road band will be made up of some of the artists who performed on "Identity": drummer Jim Keltner, guitarist Marc Ribot, bassist Dennis Crouch and keyboardist Keefus Ciancia.

"We all have a tremendous amount of chemistry," Burnett explained. "I started out as a record producer when I was a kid because I was the worst player in the bands I played in. I always felt terrible. But finally, I've found the right combination of guys who I can feel comfortable with while being the worst player on the stage."

More dates are possible, but even though Burnett now considers his own music "my default position" after years as a successful producer, he'll re-evaluate his situation after spending about a month on the road.

"By then, who knows," he said. "I might say I can't wait to work on another movie."
