In a career that has stretched beyond four decades and more than a dozen labels, Willie Nelson spent only a few years in the early 1970s with Atlantic Records. Despite his relatively short tenure there, it proved to be a pivotal era in Nelson's evolution -- a time when he abandoned Nashville's and embraced his Texas and redneck roots.

"Willie Nelson: The Complete Atlantic Sessions," due June 20 from Rhino, pairs remastered versions of the artist's two Atlantic releases -- 1973's "Shotgun Willie" and the next year's "Phases and Stages" -- with unreleased studio outtakes and alternate versions of album cuts, as well as a third disc of concert performances.

• A dozen extra cuts bolster "Shotgun Willie," which was recorded in New York after Nelson's return to Texas and a failed turn as a pig farmer ("The pigs had a great time, but I didn't make any money at all," Nelson says in "The Tao of Willie," due next month from Gotham Books. "Instead of holding a grudge against them pigs, for 30 years, I've been getting even with them one bacon sandwich at a time."). Among the goodies previously unreleased alternate takes of "Whiskey River" and "A Song for You," and the outtakes "Save Your Tears" and "I Drank All of Our Precious Love Away."

• Nelson followed his Atlantic debut with a Jerry Wexler-produced concept album, "Phases and Stages." Recorded in Muscle Shoals, Ala., the set looks at a failing marriage from both sides. "Complete" adds 10 tracks, including eh previously unreleased alternate versions of the album's "Bloody Mary Morning," "No Love Around" and "Heaven and Hell."

• The set's 16-track final disc, "Live at the Texas Opry House," stems from performances captured June 29-30, 1974 at the Austin venue that were recorded by Wexler. The bulk of the set has been heard before on the now out-of-print 1993 Rhino album "The Classic, Unreleased Collection," but five tracks -- "Shotgun Willie," "You Look Like the Devil," "Bloody Mary Morning," a "Funny How Time Slips Away"/"Crazy"/"Night Life" medley and the studio track "Willie's After Hours" -- are previously released.

As is par for the course, Nelson has tour dates scheduled throughout the spring and summer. Next week, he will play a pair of Hawaiian dates -- April 19 in Kahului and April 22 in Honolulu -- before embarking on a Canadian tour that will be, as previously reported, supported by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
