Phish's Mike Gordon is in a honky-tonk frame of mind with his new band, Ramble Dove. The group has been playing regularly in Gordon's Burlington, Vt., home base of late, but is about to hit the road for the first time en route to a previously announced June 17 performance at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tenn.

Most dates on the trek, which begins May 29 in New Haven, Conn., will feature up-and-coming outfit Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Ramble Dove, which shares its name with a character Gordon played in his movie "Outside Out," is for now a concert-only entity, but Gordon tells he will consider recording with the outfit.

"I might just push forward to the next thing," he says. "I've got some other things going this summer. I am moving toward getting into my new studio, doing some writing and getting a band together. It's going to be awhile before I figure it out. I want to take some time off from playing in order to really focus." Gordon adds that there is a "good chance" he will play some shows this summer with the Benevento/Russo Duo.

Gordon's second album with guitarist Leo Kottke, "Sixty Six Steps," won studio album of the year at the Jammy Awards last week. Gordon is hopeful for a third round of collaboration with Kottke when schedules permit.

"The more we do together, the more we realize there is potential to do more," he says. "We need to take time to do our own things and come back together. That's what happened between the first two. Hopefully that will happen again, where we get some of our own time but then we want to play together again."

With the two-year anniversary of Phish's breakup looming, Gordon says that while a variety of archival releases are in the works, "nothing is percolating in terms of playing. We all get along great but it's rare that the four of us are in the same room together. In pairs we get together, or sometimes three. Even the last meeting was a conference call, but you never know what's going to happen."
