With final performances slated for tonight (May 23), "American Idol" fans are nearly split down the middle on their choice for the reality show’s fifth winner. Of 944 votes cast in a Billboard.com poll, 51% chose grey-haired Alabaman Taylor Hicks, while 49% opted for Los Angeles' Katharine McPhee.

While the poll is unscientific, the results mirror last week's razor-thin margin between Hicks, McPhee and ultimately ousted Elliott Yamin. The latter netted 33.01% of more than 50 million votes cast via phone and text message, according to the series' host, Ryan Seacrest.

Fans of the show will vote for their favorites after Hicks and McPhee perform several songs during the one-hour episode, which will also feature a performance by Daniel Powter, whose song "Bad Day" has been the theme for exiting contestant retrospectives throughout the season.

Results will be revealed at the conclusion of tomorrow night’s finale, which in addition to Hicks and McPhee, will include performances by this season’s finalists and fourth season winner Carrie Underwood.
