Taylor Hicks, the winner of this year's "American Idol," has signed with show creator Simon Fuller's 19 Recordings Limited and Arista Records. "Do I Make You Proud," which he sang to close the May 24 finale on Fox, will be released as the Alabama native's first single on June 13. His debut album is expected later this year.
Another track from the 29-year-old Hicks, a cover of the Doobie Brothers' "Takin' It to the Streets," was made available last week on the "American Idol Season 5: Encores" (RCA) compilation. The set scored the No. 3 spot on The Billboard 200 this week.
Hicks joins the previous "Idol" winners such as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Fantasia in signing a contract with an RCA-affiliated label as part of his winnings.
According to reports, an estimated 36.4 million people tuned in to the May 24 finale, the third biggest audience draw this year behind the Super Bowl and the Academy Awards.
