Lorde To Perform At ARIA Awards
Lorde will perform at this Sunday’s ARIA Awards in Sydney. The timing is immaculate; the announcement came just hours after confirmation Lorde’s smash single “Royals” had held the No. 1 slot on the Billboard Hot 100 for a ninth week.
Surprisingly, the ARIAs will be the 17-year-old New Zealander’s first TV appearance in Australia. It’s a fact more remarkable still when considering her profile in the United States, where she taped a 25-minute performance on “Letterman” earlier this month.
Lorde became the youngest solo female artist to top the Hot 100 in 25 years last month, and the first female in 17 years to reach No. 1 on the Hot Alternative Songs chart in August. She recently signed with Songs Music Publishing in a multi-million-dollar, worldwide deal.
The teen – whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor – is also enjoying sky-high status Down Under. “Royals” is triple-platinum certified (210,000 units), and follow-up “Team” is gold certified (35,000 units). Her chart-topping debut album “Pure Heroine” is platinum certified (70,000 units).
On the night of the ARIAs, Lorde will join the likes of performers Flume, Tame Impala, Birds Of Tokyo, Vance Joy, Bliss N Eso and Jessica Mauboy. The performances will be streamed exclusively on Rdio the next day.
With eight nominations, electronic producer and artist Harley Streten -- aka Flume -- is the runaway favorite to sweep the 27th ARIA Awards in Sydney. Tame Impala is close behind with seven nominations, while Birds of Tokyo and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds grab six nods.
The parties kicked off Nov. 26 with the “ARIA Week” of gigs and masterclasses, all of which serve as entrees for the main course that is the awards show.
