Miley Cyrus Hits No. 1 on Social 50 Chart in Wake of 'Wrecking Ball' Video Debut

This week on the Social 50 chart, Miley Cyrus hits No. 1 for the first time while Linkin Park returns thanks to a 3D game. Cyrus becomes the 16th artist to reach the No. 1 spot on the young chart, thanks to the debut of her "Wrecking Ball" music video.

The Social 50 ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions as measured by music analytics company Next Big Sound.

For the week, just over 1 million conversations about Cyrus were recorded on Facebook, which in turn lead to her adding 207,000 fans on the platform (an 8% increase). 201,000 new Twitter fans (a 100% increase over the previous week) help bring the total amount of fans she added across all networks to 639,000 for the charting week. Also significantly helping her chart position was traffic to her Wikipedia page, which increases by 99% over the week before and saw 752,000 views.

Linkin Park re-enters the Social 50 tally at No. 43 amidst a campaign designed to promote "A Light That Never Comes," the band’s new single featuring Steve Aoki. The promotion centers around the band’s own custom 3D Facebook game called #LPRecharge, where users can unlock the song. Linkin Park also announced the release of the remix album, "Recharged," due Oct. 29.

The activity on Linkin Park's Facebook page resulted in an 18% rise in conversation, helping them to add 185,000 new fans to their overall fanbase. Traffic to Linkin Park’s Wikipedia page, which increased by 13% over the previous week, was the biggest contributing factor to their re-entry.

Avicii makes his biggest jump on the Social 50 chart since he first debuted eight weeks ago on August 10, following the slow-burning success of his single "Wake Me Up." This week, he climbs 38-28 to achieve his highest position on the chart to date as he readied the debut of his first studio album, True, this past Tuesday (Sept. 17).

On Friday Aug. 13, Avicii took over Pete Tong's program on BBC’s Radio 1 = with EDM greats Sebastian Ingrosso, Armin Van Buuren and more. Along with the broadcast, Avicii also released the audio for each of the tracks from "True" to his VEVO channel, which managed to accumulate 23 million plays during the week. He also adds 206,000 fans to his overall fan base, a 2% increase over the previous week.

Looping back to the top 10, while Justin Bieber rises 13-5 to re-enter the tally’s upper echelon, it’s noteworthy that the two previous weeks were his first and longest departure from the top 10 of the Social 50 chart.  

Katy Perry (1-2) and One Direction (2-3) fall in the wake of Cyrus smashing No. 1. Timberlake swings 6-4, while Taylor Swift slides 4-6. The buzz around Eminem’s "Berzerk" comes down to a simmer as evidenced by his 3-7 drop in the standings, while Ariana Grande dips only slightly (7-8) in her album "Yours Truly’s" second week of release. Britney Spears ascends only slightly, as her new single "Work Bitch" hit airwaves last Sunday (Sept. 15), while Demi Lovato jumps 14-10 to anchor to top 10.
