Burgeoning guitar maker First Act and auto giant Volkswagen have struck a deal through which new VW customers will receive a brand new six-string that is playable through the car's stereo system.

Through the end of the year, drivers who buy or lease specialized versions of six VW cars (Jetta, Jetta GLI, GTI, Rabbit, New Beetle and New Beetle Convertible) will be handed a First Act GarageMaster electric guitar. Each axe will feature the VW logo, will display its corresponding car's vehicle identification number and be fitted with colored pick guards matching the exterior of the car.

John Mayer, Slash and Christopher Guest (as his "Spinal Tap" character Nigel Tufnel) will appear in ads promoting the partnership.

Boston-based First Act has made a name for itself in the past two years, as a manufacturer of both affordable, beginner six-strings as well as specially crafted guitars for members of such bands as Franz Ferdinand and Maroon 5.

Somewhat famously, ex-Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg walked into a Wal Mart store some two years ago and stumbled upon First Act's beginner guitar, which he went on to play on tour. The company has since launched a Westerberg signature model.
