Spoon's Britt Daniel makes his first foray into film score work with "Stranger Than Fiction," the soundtrack for which arrives Nov. 7 via Columbia. Daniel penned three instrumentals in tandem with in-demand movie music composer Brian Reitzell and also chipped in a new Spoon song, "The Book I Write."

Daniel and Reitzell had talked about working together on a film for several years but finally got down to business in January in Los Angeles. "We watched the movie and tried to come up with stuff off the cuff, but we got a little bit more lucky with me coming in with ideas and music I'd had before," Daniel tells Billboard.com from Austin, Texas, where Spoon are recording a new album. "Not stuff with words, just music -- stuff I'd shelved."

Daniel describes "Flours" as a "moody organ and reverb-y guitar piece," while "Writer's Block" sports "a full-on string section with piano and a little guitar. That's the most orchestrated one." "Auditor" is marked by electric harpsichord and is "a nutty little transition piece," according to the artist.

Previously released Spoon songs appear throughout the film, including "The Way We Get By" and "My Mathematical Mind." When it came time to work on an exclusive track, Daniel played Reitzell a handful of "sketches"; at that point, "The Book I Write" was "barely there. All I had was that lyric. It's kind of funny that it was the one that ended up fitting in. It runs over the end credits."

Daniel says he is "delighted" at the finished product, although he went into the project with a healthy dose of trepidation. "I didn't know what to expect or if I could even do it. It was a little scary," he says. "But those are the kind of things that once you do them and they work out, you're the happiest about. You accomplish something you didn't think you could do."

"Stranger Than Fiction" stars Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman and Queen Latifah. It opens Nov. 10 in U.S. theaters.
