Green Day, Avenged Sevenfold, Alice In Chains and Megadeth are among the big names confirmed to the hard rock and heavy metal-edged Soundwave Festival, which winds its way across Australia next February and March.

The bill for the five city trek also includes Rob Zombie, Placebo, AFI, Korn and Stone Temple Pilots – featuring its new frontman Chester Bennington.

Soundwave started in 2004 as a one-day show in a single city – Perth. Things have moved on since then. The festival regularly shifts about 200,000 tickets and now rivals -- or has surpassed, depending on who you talk to -- the alternative giant Big Day Out and the EDM fests Stereosonic and Future Music Festival as the kings of their kind Down Under.

One act who won’t be playing Soundwave is Nine Inch Nails. And the industrial veterans apparently won’t be on the Soundwave bill any time soon. Soundwave’s architect AJ Maddah dropped some choice words on Twitter about NIN’s Trent Reznor, sparking a brief but amusing battle between the two.

Maddah is rare among industry leaders in his heavy-duty use of the Twitter platform to personally communicate – and vent -- with fans and bands. Maddah responded to a disappointed NIN fan by explaining: “sadly Trent wants to be mainstream now and reach Justin Timberlake's audience :(“

Maddah continued with a stream of NIN-themed tweets, to which Reznor finally responded: “Australia: we love you and we’re coming. Didn’t feel Soundwave was the right vibe for us or our fans - working on a better scenario.”

The Soundwave ticket onsale starts Sept. 5
