Four years on from the release of its cult classic 2002 debut, rock duo Tenacious D is back in full force with "The Pick of Destiny," the Epic soundtrack to its feature film of the same name. The title track has already been as high as No. 9 on Billboard's Hot Videoclip Tracks chart.
Jack Black and Kyle Gass have whipped up a host of new material for the album, including "Master Exploder" ("Jack dreams how kick-ass we're going to be once we have the Pick of Destiny," Gass says), opener "Kickapoo" (which features Meat Loaf and Ronnie James Dio) and "Classico" ("It's about when Jack and I first meet at Venice Beach, and a spontaneous jam happens," Gass offers. "Jack starts singing along a classical riff to my classical guitar solo").
In the film, which boasts cameos from Ben Stiller and Tim Robbins, the D are on "a quest for 'the pick,' a magical pick that will supposedly help us rock like the rock gods we so admire. It's a zillion laughs," Gass says.
The band will kick off a North American tour Nov. 17 in Los Angeles, the same day the film hits U.S. theaters. Black and Gass will be backed by guitarist John Konesky, bassist John Spiker and drummer Brookes Wackerman for the trek, which includes a Dec. 1 show at New York's hallowed Madison Square Garden. In addition to a previously announced European run, Tenacious D will also visit Australia and New Zealand, beginning Jan. 9 in Christchurch.
