Adele brought a touch of class to the VMAs, clutching her chest as she performed her piano ballad "Someone Like You."

Adele, Coldplay, Florence & The Machine and Jessie J were among the British artists to earn multiple 2012 BRIT Award nominations, which were announced on Thursday (Jan. 12). The 32nd annual BRIT Awards, which honor the best popular music coming out of the U.K., will be held on Feb. 21.

Adele picked up nominations for Best British Female Solo Artist, Mastercard British Album of the Year for sophomore smash "21," and Best British Single for her Hot 100-topping "Someone Like You." Coldplay's fifth full-length, "Mylo Xyloto," joins "21" in the Album of the Year category, while the rockers are also up for Best British Group.

Newcomers like James Blake, Ed Sheeran, Jessie J and Anna Calvi were represented in the British Male Solo Artist and British Female Solo Artist categories, respectively, while veteran groups like Elbow, Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys scored nods for Best British Group. Rising pop star Emeli Sandé has already won and will receive the Critics' Choice award, while Blur will be handed the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award.

Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and Bon Iver scored single nominations in the international categories, while the Best International Group category features an eclectic mix of Fleet Foxes, Foo Fighters, Jay-Z & Kanye West, Lady Antebellum and Maroon 5. Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons and Tinie Tempah were the big winners at last year's BRIT Awards.
