Vampire Weekend, MGMT and Robin Thicke are among the big names confirmed to perform at the Sept. 21 Virgin Mobile FreeFest, the telecoms group’s charitable initiative focused on ending youth homelessness.
Other artists confirmed to the multi-stage festival’s line-up include The Avett Brothers, Pretty Lights, Kaskade, City and Colour, Icona Pop and CHVRCHES.
Organizers promise to distribute “tens of thousands” of free tickets from Aug. 9 via ticketfly.com, while an earlier, Aug. 8 window will open for Virgin Mobile customers, for prior Virgin Mobile Festival ticket buyers, and Virgin Mobile’s Facebook “friends” and Twitter “followers”.
Last year’s show drew 50,000 attendees, and the free tickets were grabbed “in just minutes,” according to a spokesperson for the fest.
Over its previous four years, FreeFest has raised enough money to build The Sasha Bruce Re-Generation House in Washington, D.C., a transitional home for homeless youth. The contributions from this year’s event will go to running and maintaining the house for years to come, and the site hosted the line-up announcement by way of a wall mural.
“What better way to celebrate this commitment than to ink the line-up on its 25-foot walls? This is a proud day for us,” comments Ron Faris, head of brand marketing, Virgin Mobile USA. “This is the house that FreeFest built.”
A limited number of FreeFest “freemium” packages will be available, which include admission to the event, a branded T-shirt and a souvenir cup that comes with free fountain drinks throughout the day. A $10 charitable donation will be made to Virgin Mobile USA’s youth homelessness initiative from the cost of each package purchased.
The fest is presented by Samsung and promoted by I.M.P.
