Making a big debut at No. 11 on the Social 50 this week is a 9-year old rapper from Atlanta, known simply as MattyB. As seen on NBC's "Today" rapping "Ice Ice Baby" and featured on "The Insider," MattyB bows this week after the release of his newest single "That's The Way."
The video for "That's The Way" has received over a million views on YouTube after being released on March 6, and has allowed MattyB to more than double his fan base across Facebook, Twitter and of course YouTube (which was up 148% in the tracking week ending March 10).
The Social 50 chart ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and iLike, using a formula that blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with weekly artist page views and weekly song plays.
The unsigned young rapper, dawning the online moniker "MattyBRaps," has seemingly used social media to his best advantage. The MattyBRaps YouTube channel has over 370,000 followers and over 100 million video views, many of which come from videos of him covering or parodying popular songs such as Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby," LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way." These covers will often show up in the related videos column to the right of the video of the song that they're covering and can serve as an way to drive traffic to an artist's channel and other videos.
His custom skinned YouTube page not only features links to his secondary YouTube page "MattyBVlogs," where fans get to experience MattyB's personality through behind the scenes videos and exclusives, but links out to his Facebook, Twitter and official website, mattybraps.com.
The White Stripes re-enter the Social 50 at No. 20 after receiving over 170,000 Myspace views (a 1,400% increase over the previous week) and gaining over 16,000 Facebook fans likely due to recent press and activity around the duo's former front man Jack White. White recently performed on "Saturday Night Live" on March 3 premiering his new single "Sixteen Saltines." White's tour kicked off in Chattanooga, Tenn. on March 10.
Meanwhile, Britney Spears increases her standing from No. 29 to No. 19 as news and rumors surrounding her potentially becoming a judge on "The X Factor" contributes to a 31% increase in Twitter followers and a 14% increase in her overall audience base.
Back in the top 10 this week, Eminem jumps 15-6 (up 14% in overall plays and a 28% gain in page views) while One Direction returns to the top 10 (climbing 16-9.
Justin Bieber is up one to No. 2, Rihanna is pushed down 2-3 and Lady Gaga holds at No. 4. Chris Brown inches up two rungs to No. 5 and David Guetta vaults 12-7. Katy Perry falls three to No. 8 while Taylor Swift heads back to the top 10, up three slots to No. 10.
At the very top of the list, Adele holds the No. 1 crown for a tenth consecutive week.
