Artists usually increase or decrease their standing on Billboard's Social 50 chart one of two ways: buzz generated by big releases (or lack thereof) or by continuously engaging and growing their fan base. This week's gainers are a mix of both, starting with Flo Rida's jump facilitated by the release of his latest album, "Wild Ones."
The Social 50 chart ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, using a formula that blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with weekly artist page views and weekly song plays.
"Wild Ones" was released last Tuesday (July 3) and features "Whistle," which has received over 32.5 million views on YouTube since its initial May 24 release and has recently grown in popularity. "Whistle" debuted on the On-Demand Songs chart this week at No. 39 and has risen 8-4 on Digital Songs with 172,000 downloads, up 52% from the previous week coinciding with the album's release. Flo Rida himself managed to significantly increase his overall fan base during the charting week with an 8% increase in follower acquisition, leading to 111,002 new fans during the charting week.
Making slow but steady gains and creeping her way onto the Social 50 this week with a No. 48 debut is Ariana Grande, a Universal Republic-signed singer/songwriter probably most well-known at the moment for playing Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon teen sitcom "Victorious." "Victorious" centers around an up-and-coming singer named Tori Vega played by Victoria Justice, another known YouTube conspirator. Grande's steady flow of YouTube videos (92% growth in viewership this week) and interactions with her fans have helped increase her Twitter following to over 2 million.
South Korean guitarist Sungha Jung, a popular act on YouTube, released several videos this week, including a cover of Maroon 5's "Payphone" (871,000 YouTube views to date). It, along with a number of other releases, caused him to re-enter the chart at No. 38 with a 38% increase in overall fan acquisition and a 20% increase in overall plays during the charting week.
Hip-hop collective Odd Future comes in at No. 50 this week after releasing the video entitled "Sam Is Dead." The video, depicting the Wolf Gang in Vietnam gear facing a ruthless general (played by Tyler, the Creator) set to the Tyler and Domo Genesis' track from "The OF Tape Vol. 2" has racked up 1.2 million views since its June 28 release. The activity helped the group experience a 23% increase in overall fanbase during the charting week.
Back up in the top 10, we see a few notable shifts on the tally. Cimorelli again breaks into the top 10, rising 24-9, acquiring 1,600,000 views on YouTube with a cover of One Direction's "One Thing." One Direction itself fell (6-7) along with Adele (4-6) and Gaga (5-10). Nicki Minaj rises (11-8) as did Skrillex (13-4) who has been busy touring across the country with his Full Flex Express Tour. Linkin Park gains ground (8-5) as does Katy Perry (3-2), who swaps spots with Justin Bieber (2-3). Rihanna remains supreme at No. 1
