Scraps Plan for First Australian Dates Since 1993's 'Girlie Show'
Madonna has scrapped plans to tour Australia for the first time in 20 years. Live Nation confirmed late Tuesday that the "MDNA" tour will wrap in South America in December. "That's all we can say," a spokesperson said, according to BBC News.
It was confirmed in February that Madonna would bring her tour to Australia in early 2013, however no hard dates have been announced. According to Australian media reports, stadiums in major cities including Sydney and Melbourne had already been booked, though that can't be confirmed.
Live Nation gave no reasons for bypassing Australia. She last toured there on her "Girlie Show World Tour" -- the last show being Dec. 4, 1993 in Sydney.
Arthur Fogel, CEO of Live Nation Global Touring, told Billboard in February that it has been too long since Madonna's last visit Down Under.
"Of the shows we're doing, I'd say 25%-30% will be markets she's never played before. There's still a few left. We'll get to these markets where she's never been, some exciting new places, and get back to Australia after too long a time."
Madonna performed in London's Hyde Park on Tuesday and in Paris on July 14, when, during the song "Nobody Knows Me," she caused a stir by incorporating an image of right-wing politician Marine Le Pen with a swastika superimposed on her face. Le Pen's party, Front National, is expected to take legal action.
Wrinkles aside, the tour has been a financial success, and the Material Girl recently topped Billboard's Hot Tours ranking with the first box office totals reported from the tour, which launched at the end of May.
Ticket sales revenue from the first 11 venues on the tour schedule totaled $49.5 million from 417,448 sold tickets. The tour began in Israel on May 31 with a crowd of 33,457 in attendance for the first performance. She wraps a European leg on Aug. 21 in Nice, France and then heads to North America to perform through mid-November. A South American leg begins in Colombia on Nov. 28 and will wrap on Dec. 22 in Argentina.
