Long-running psychedelic troupe Animal Collective reached a critical and commercial high point with their rich, melody-laden lad full-length, 2009's "Merriweather Post Pavilion." With the follow-up, "Centipede Hz," out Sept. 4 on Domino Records, the quartet has unleashed a wholly weird lead single, "Today's Supernatural," that recalls the group's freaky pop antics on 2007's "Strawberry Jam."
With Panda Bear deferring lead vocal duties to Avey Tare, Animal Collective uses kaleidoscopic synthesizers and vocals that flop around on the start-stop sounds. "You'll find something you believe you should do/Sometimes it won't come so easily/But sometimes you gotta get ma-a-a-ad!" Tare seethes before the song spins around on its head for an extended bridge.
Animal Collective premiered "Today's Supernatural" on Sunday night (July 29) during their new venture, Animal Collective Radio, which will be a weekly online transmission in partnership with The Creators Project and Domino. This week's set was hosted by Panda Bear and featured guest mixes by Black Dice and Haunted Graffiti; the group is encouraging fans to compile a provided collection of sounds into their own radio mixes as well. Two weeks after the release of "Centipede Hz," Animal Collective will kick off an extended U.S. tour on Sept. 18 in Seattle, before heading overseas in November.
