Folk Icon Releasing Two Albums on Sept. 25: 'A More Perfect Union' and 'Pete Remembers Woody'
Folk music legend Pete Seeger, 93, is releasing two albums on Appleseed Recordings.
"A More Perfect Union" features 14 new songs that Seeger has penned with singer-songwriter Lorre Wyatt, several of which are duets with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Morello, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris and Dar Williams. "Pete Remembers Woody" is two-CD set celebrating Guthrie's centennial through anecdotes, reminiscences and songs.
Both albums will be released Sept. 25.
"We really wanted people who are carrying on Pete's spirit," Appleseed owner Jim Musselman told Billboard.com, noting the album took two years to create. "Bruce Springsteen has carried on Pete's vision. Tom Morello and the albums he is doing as the Night Watchman are among the best political albums out now. Pete loves harmony singers and I feel the best is Emmylou Harris. All of the artists jumped at the opportunity to do something like this."
The songs on "A More Perfect Union" represent Seeger's responses to recent political, economic and environmental issues as well as personal observations. The track with Springsteen, "God's Counting on Me … God's Counting on You," for example, was a response to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
On "Pete Remembers Woody," Seeger speaks about the story behind "This Land is Your Land," their experiences hitchhiking across the country and offers stories about Lead Belly, life and music. "It's interesting, insightful and sometimes funny," Musselman says.
Included are versions of Guthrie's songs performed by Seeger, Guthrie's son, Arlo, and others; Woody Guthrie is represented in a duet with Cisco Houston on "New York Town."
Appleseed Recordings has been releasing new and archival Seeger material for 15 years. Two of the releases, "At 89" (2008) and "Tomorrow's Children" (2010), won Grammy Awards.
Besides traditional physical and online retail,Seeger's recordings are sold at museums and through progressive organizations and environmental organizations. The organizations that sell Seeger CD's get to keep half the money. Adds Musselman: "That way it raises money for organizations and we get the CD out there more to people."
