Sonar, Barcelona's cutting-edge music and multimedia arts festival, today announced Sonar on Tour, the event's first-ever road trek. The festival is slated to come to eight North American cities -- New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Denver, Oakland, Montreal and Boston -- between Oct. 31 - Nov. 10 (full listing below).

Sonar On Tour will be led electronic music artists blending live performance and DJ sets and will include South Africa's Die Antwoord, deconstructionist house trio Azari & III, Detroit-native Seth Troxler, Germany's Paul Kalkbrenner on the B-pitch Control label, Canadian artist Tiga, French sound sculptor Gesaffelstein and Grammy nominated Nic Fanciulli.

Sonar was founded as an annual festival in Barcelona in June 1994. Its guiding principle over the past 19 years is to celebrate the avante garde and experimentation while blending artistry with entertainment and exploring the boundaries of electronic music and its cultural iterations -- it is also known for having great dance parties. Though, as the event's press release makes it clear the tour is "eschewing bubble-gum EDM..."

Sonar on Tour, however, is not the festival's first incursion into the U.S. In May of 2009, Sonar brought a one-off show in New York City at the Baryshnikov Arts Center called SonarSound NY. That bill included installations by Marcel·lí Antúnez and ReacTable and featuring Ikue Mori and music by Balago, Árbol and Fibla for a film by Taiwan's Tsai Ming-Liang; Hidrogenesse; the Del Palo Soundsystem; dj d.a.r.y.l.; and ex-residents of Barcelona DJ/Rupture and Prefuse 73.

Sonar 2012's headliners, which ran June 14-16 in Barcelona, included Fatboy Slim, Deadmau5, Hot Chip, Luciano, The Roots, James Murphy, Richie Hawtin, Lana Del Rey, Nicolas Jaar, Laurent Garnier, New Order, Amon Tobin, Flying Lotus, Mouse on Mars, Kode9, Cooly G and James Blake amongst others.

Sonar, which is a privately owned company and run by Enric Palau, also holds annual festivals in Tokyo, Cape Town and Sao Paolo. In 2010 Sonar split itelf between Barcelona and Sonar Galica in A Coruna, Spain.

Tickets for Sonar on Tour, which will have no sponsorship, is available through Ticketmaster. For more information on the 'Sonar North American Tour' go to www.sonarontour.com.
