29 Black Music Milestones: 'The Twist' Named Hot 100's All-Time No. 1

On the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Hot 100 chart in 2008, Billboard released its list of the All-Time Hot 100 songs, and Chubby Checker's 1960 smash "The Twist" sat at the top. The single not only inspired millions to shake their hips, but also set an incredible precedent for the chart in its infancy by spending 39 weeks on the Hot 100.

"The Twist" also became the only song to ever enjoy two separate runs to No. 1 on the Hot 100: its original release and peak in Sept. 1960, and following Checker's appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," another chart-topping performance in Jan. 1962. The classic track represented a milestone in pop music as well as for Checker, who would go on to achieve a total of 32 Hot 100 appearances.
