Apparel company Patagonia is entering the digital download retail space to raise money for environmental organizations endorsed by artists. Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson, Bonnie Raitt and Maroon 5 are among the artists participating in the initiative, which launches today (Mar. 1) at patagonia.com/music.
The Patagonia Music Collective will offer exclusive tracks for $.99 each, with net proceeds going directly to the environmental organizations of the artists' preference. A long-term project, the Patagonia Music Collective is launching with two volumes of 11 tracks each.
One new benefit track and three emerging tracks will be released weekly. In addition, physical compilation albums will be sold at Patagonia stores.
"The groups these musicians are supporting are the ones that are ultimately going to save the planet," Patagonia founder/owner Yvon Chouinard says. "Patagonia is hopeful other musicians will see that by just donating a song they can easily provide their favorite environmental group with a new stream of financing."
Raitt, for example, will offer a track to support non-profit environmental law firm Earth Justice.
Patagonia stresses that its Music Collective is neither a record label nor a downloads-for-charity campaign. Their goal is to foster an artistic and political exchange between musicians, fans, environmental advocates and Patagonia customers.
Other musicians on board include Philip Glass, Zac Brown Band, the Bad Plus, Blitzen Trapper, Mason Jennings, John Scofield, Brett Dennen, Sun Kil Moon, Umphrey's McGee, Taj Mahal, Drive By Truckers, Bobby Long, String Cheese Incident, O.A.R., Ziggy Marley, Los Lobos, Abigail Washburn, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Robert Randolph and the Family Band.
