Charlotte, N.C.'s Side by Side makes soulful indie-pop and toasted marshmallows. Just don't ask if they're related.

Describe your sound and your audience in your own words.

Our sound is an interesting mix of pop, rock, and indie, with a mixture of soulful, jazzy vocals. Our audience is all very good-looking people that like long walks on the beach and jousting.

Tell us about your first gig ever -- just how awkward was it? And how has your live show evolved since then?

Our first gig was actually very natural, since we have all performed before. It was very humbling to have so much of the professional Charlotte music scene come out and support us. However, we will say, our guitarist was a little overzealous at first and our singer kept swinging her hair in all the wrong directions. Since then we've all learned how to put all our performance chemistries together.

What's the strangest thing anyone has ever said about your band?

Some magazine called our singer pint-sized! She was very upset and is still slightly bitter. Another time some drunk guy asked Mike and Joey if they were brothers. They replied yes and then told him they were twins. He drunkenly replied, "Twins. Cool!" then pointed to Joey. "When's your birthday?" Joey told him May 6. Then he pointed to Mike, "When's your birthday?" I'll never forget the look on Joey's face. Mike just turned to talk to some hot chick and Joey responded to him with, "Yeah you've got to stop drunken', man."

Why should you win this competition?

Just knowing Mike and Joey and their character on and off stage should be enough for us to win. Joelle is by far the most talented, natural and hardworking vocalist we ever met. Aside from that, we have the talent that today's music is looking for, and it is time the music of today is introduced to a new sound that we can and will provide.

What's your next project?

Perfecting the toasted marshmallow. Band-wise, we are working on tour dates this summer, as well as creating more music that encompasses all of our talents.

If your band had to come up with a plan for total world domination in the next 10 seconds, what would it be?

Introducing the world to perfectly toasted marshmallows. Gaining their respect and admiration. Then jousting!
