'X Factor' Airtimes Revealed, 'American Idol' Returning Jan. 22
Fox has given "The X Factor" the odd running time of 90 minutes and positioned it at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning this fall, the network announced Monday morning (May 16). An hourlong results show will be aired Thursdays.
"The X Factor" features a judges panel of Simon Cowell, Antonio "L.A." Reid, Cheryl Cole and Paula Abdul, with the winning singer receiving a $5 million recording contract with Syco/Sony Music. The premiere date is expected to be in September.
"We feel we have the gold standard in 'American Idol' and 'X Factor',"Fox Networks Group's chairman of entertainment Peter Rice said during a conference call Monday, rejecting the idea that NBC's "The Voice" had stolen some of "X Factor's" thunder. "'Idol' has been rejuvenated and in Simon Cowell we have the absolute star of the genre. We just shot the first auditions in Los Angeles and it had excitement and buzz like w have never seen before."
Fox Broadcasting's president of entertainment Kevin Reilly said "The goal is to achieve the same level of fandom and spectacle in the U.K.," where it is the biggest show on television."
Once a winer is declared on "X Factor," "American Idol" will return for its 11th season. "American Idol" will begin Jan. 22 immediately following the NFC Championship Game, provided the NFL labor dispute is settled and the season is played as scheduled.
In other music-related Fox news, the third season of "Glee" will contintue to anchor Tuesdays at 8 p.m. and will again take a six-week break in March and April. Actress-singer Zooey Deschanel -- the she in She & Him - will star in the new comedy "New Girl," airing Tuesdays at 9 p.m.
