'American Idol' winner Fantasia Barrino announced she was pregnant to a benefit concert audience on Sunday (July 31), telling fans she has nothing to hide. This will be the R&B star's second child.
The 27-year-old North Carolina native was at a performance celebrating the opening of the Riverview Apartment in Jacksonville, Florida when she decided to let them in on a secret.
"You are the first persons that I share this news with," she said, in a video posted on YouTube. "And I share this with you because I can relate to you. For a while I walked around thinking, 'What will they say? What will they think about me?' But now I tell you, I don't live my life for folk. So, this child that I carry … God has given me this child, and I don't have to hide it from none of y'all!"
Barrino, the season 3 champ of "American Idol," currently stars in the VH1 reality series, "Fantasia for Real."
No word on who the father is, but the news comes amid reports Barrino is back together with her ex-boyfriend Antwaun Cook, with whom she had an affair while he was still married. In August of 2010, the 'I'm Doin Me' star was hospitalized in North Carolina after overdosing on aspirin and a sleep aid.
She later confirmed in an interview for a VH1 Behind the Music special that the incident was a suicide attempt. "At that moment I wanted out. I wanted it to be over with," she said. She also admitted to aborting a child with Cook around the attempt.
Barrino's first child, daughter Zion, from a previous relationship, turns 10 on Aug. 8.
