A wardrobe malfunction on "Good Morning America" gives Nicki Minaj a boost up to the top 10 on the Social 50. The singer slipped out of her top while performing on ABC's morning talker on Aug. 5, and in turn, the resulting media frenzy shoots the rapper up the tally this week, 12-9.
Billboard's Social 50 chart ranks the most active artists on the world's leading social networking sites -- YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and iLike -- using a formula blending weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with weekly artist page views and weekly song plays.
News of the Minaj event spilled over to YouTube, with two videos picking up a majority of the views. HollyscoopTV's story leads the pack with more than 1.3 million views. Rapper and web comedian Trapik, who himself is No. 1 on Uncharted, also posted a commentary on the event, which gained 840,000 views.
Interestingly, ABC's own on-stage interview with Minaj before the show caught little interest, picking up a mere 44,000 views. Despite a five second delay, the live east coast feed of the show still included the slip-up, which sparked further controversy. In the following days (Aug. 6 and 7), netizens hit up Minaj's Wikipedia page 200,000 times, according to the data firm Next Big Sound. She also grew in her fans (351,000) and views (94,000).
In other chart moves, Avril Lavigne bounds 21-12 following an AOL Music Sessions performance on Au. 1. She performed her singles "My Happy Ending," "Smile," and "Girlfriend." Combined, the songs earned almost 6 million YouTube views.
The next day, an overly eager Brazil fan accosted Lavigne on stage. During a performance of "Fix You" by Coldplay, the singer turned her back to the audience and a patron rushed toward her, but security intervened, apprehending them. The video of the conflict has received 295,000 YouTube views.
In other numbers, Lavigne had a great week on Facebook and Twitter, bringing in 350,000 fans.
Elsewhere, duo Karmin debuts at No. 27, thanks to their spirited cover of "Skyscraper" by Demi Lovato. Since premiering on July 27, the video has gained 696,000 YouTube views. This feat marks an interesting trend on Social 50, given that three other acts -- Christina Grimmie, Tyler Ward and Tiffany Alvord -- have also debuted or charted higher due to their "Skyscraper" covers.
Grimmie uploaded her cover on July 16, which went on to rake in 3.8 million views. Then last week, Ward (872,000 views) and Alvord (339,000 views) had success with their versions.
On July 28, Cody Simpson surprised fans via YouTube with news of tour. Shortly thereafter, said tour kicked off on August 7 -- at a mall in Boston -- in support of his EP "Coast To Coast." Thanks to the walls of screaming fans in attendance and the buzz surrounding his EP -- due out Sept. 20 -- the singer propels up the tally, 28-20. With this action, Simpson's MySpace plays skyrocketed from 30,000 to 78,000 week-to-week, but interestingly, his number of fans added actually stayed stagnant at 71,000. The first date of the tour did, however, fall just outside of the tracking period.
As for the rest of the top 10, Justin Bieber (No. 1), Rihanna (No. 2), and Selena Gomez (No. 10) hold their positions. Akon (6-3) and Michael Jackson (9-7) jump, while Shakira (4-3), Lady Gaga (5-4), Katy Perry (6-5), and Eminem (8-7) slide down the tally.
