1000 No. 1s Video Series Day 16: Avril Lavigne Talks About Topping the Hot 100
2011 was the year that Billboard celebrated the 1000th No. 1 song on the Hot 100. As we look back on this year in music, we're celebrating that milestone with a month-long series of videos --- one for each day of December -- chatting with 31 of the hitmakers who rocketed to the top of the chart since its inception in 1958.SEE THE FULL CHART HERE.
On day 16 of our 1,000 Hot No. 1s video series, we move from yesterday's '99 jam -- "If You Had My Love" by Jennifer Lopez -- to a more recent pop-rock hit as we chat with Avril Lavigne about her 2007 No. 1, "Girlfriend." "Sometimes I've found that the stuff I write really quickly and don't really think about tends to be the magic," Lavigne tells Billboard.com. "We both knew, Dr. Luke and I, that that song was going to do well."
Lavigne's "Girlfriend" bopped to No. 1 on May 5, 2007, knocking Timbaland's "Give It To Me" out of the top slot. It was Avril's fifth top 10 on the Hot 100, and her best showing to to date.
Be sure to come back tomorrow (Dec. 17) for the next 1000 No. 1s video: Jason Derulo talks about his No. 1, "Whatcha Say."
