The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey started out 15 years ago as an upstart electric jazz ensemble that blended jam band, funk, rock and avant sensibilities. Now, the group has matured into one of the finest and most exciting jazz groups around. Morphing from a trio to a quartet on its latest EP, "One Day In Brooklyn," the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey -- led by co-founder Brian Haas on piano -- has imaginatively expanded its sound palette by enlisting lap steel guitarist Chris Combs, whose snaky lines slither through the entirety of the six-song collection. In addition to serving up obscure Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Abdullah Ibrahim tunes, the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey shines on a balladic dance through John Lennon's "Julia" and a delightful countrified take on Thelonious Monk's "Four in One." The band also delivers two originals, including the Dr. Dre-meets-Beethoven swinging jaunt "Drethoven." -Dan Ouellette
