Avril Lavigne and Nickelback's Chad Kroeger officially said "I Do" on Monday (July 1) in a celebration that took place in the South of France.
Though multiple sources prematurely reported the Canadian couple's nuptials had taken place on Saturday, the singers quickly debunked the rumors, stating the wedding had not occurred yet. In a bit of a patriotic tribute, Kroeger and Lavigne decided marry on July 1, Canada Day, instead.
While Kroeger told PEOPLE that both he and Lavigne think it's "very cool" that their anniversary will always be on Canada Day, he also revealed an additional reason as to why the couple chose this particular date to tie the knot.
"We met while recording music in March, but we started dating July 1, so I'll let the math speak for itself there," Kroeger said. "We can’t wait to start our life together. We're very happy."
The 37-year-old Nickelback frontman proposed to Lavigne, 27, on Aug. 8 with a 14-carat diamond engagement ring after just six months of dating.
Additionally, the "Sk8er Boi" singer spilled details on how Kroeger got creative with his proposal in an interview with radio and television personality, Ryan Seacrest.
"I had been making this scrapbook of my time in the studio. I walk over and he had taken a photo of himself holding the ring box and put the Polariod in my scrapbook,” Lavigne told Seacrest. “It was really romantic and kind of made sense."
While this is Kroeger’s first marriage, this is Lavigne's second walk down the aisle; the Canadian singer was married to Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley for three years before the two called it quits.
