'The Voice' Stars Usher and Shakira Surge on Social 50 Chart
The reality show newcomers have launched into the chart's top 10.
Following Shakira and Usher's debut on NBC's "The Voice," the two pop stars are sent flying on Billboard's Social 50 chart this week.
The pair debuted last week on the talent show, alongside continuing coaches Blake Shelton and Maroon 5's Adam Levine. In turn, both Usher and Shakira jump straight into the top 10 on the Social 50. They rise 19-8 and 14-7, respectively.
The Social 50 chart ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions.
Usher's rise is driven in part by over 164,000 views to his Wikipedia page (a 341% increase over the previous week). Also factoring into his gain was views to his VEVO channel, which received over 4.8 million views for the week.
Shakira, who topped the Social 50 in February upon the birth of her child, gained 424,000 new fans last week across networks like Facebook and Twitter. On Instagram, where she is particularly popular, she added 23,000 new fans (up 89%).
Avril Lavigne is set to drop a new single entitled "Here's To Never Growing Up" on April 9, and she's been promoting the cut with an online promotion whose engagement has pushed her 42-16 in the Social 50 tally. During the charting week, Lavigne utilized a custom Facebook app that allowed users to lip sync to the new single for a chance to be featured in the official lyric video. The latter will premiere the same day as the song bows on Ryan Seacrest's syndicated radio show.
The user-generated campaign around the lyric video created a surge in online engagement, causing a 109% rise in Facebook reaction. She added 260,000 new Facebook fans last week, up over 1,000% from the previous week. The attention led many to visit her page on Wikipedia, where a 30% increase in weekly traffic led to 169,000 visitors.
As for the top 10 this week: Justin Timberlake (1-3) relinquishes his throne as Justin Bieber bounces back to No. 1 and Beyonce continues to rise (6-2). Rihanna slides (3-4), Taylor Swift climbs (6-5), One Direction slips (5-6) and Bruno Mars remains steady at No. 9. Katy Perry closes out the top tier at No. 10.
