The National Announce New Album for May, Tour Dates

The National performs at All Points West on July 31, 2009, rain be damned.

Summer dates include stops at Bonnaroo and Brooklyn's Barclays Center

The National, one of indie rock's most critically acclaimed bands, will release their sixth studio album this May.

The band made the announcement today via Twitter, following up news that they'd be hitting the road this summer for a string of tour dates, some of them with Brooklyn's Dirty Projectors.

The tour begins with one of the National's biggest gigs ever-- a June 5 headlining gig at the Barclays Center, the same Brooklyn venue where artists like Jay-Z and Coldplay have recently shared the stage. Brooklyn avant-rockers Dirty Projectors will open the National's next four shows, in addition to the four more concerts, before both acts play Bonnaroo, June 13-16.

The National's last LP, 2010's "High Violet," peaked at No. 1 on Alternative Albums and No. 3 on the Billboard 200. The album was released via 4AD, an imprint within the London-based indie Beggar's Banquet, whom the National have recorded their folk-inflected indie rock for since 2005.
