This week's Social 50 chart brings a new entrant into the top 10, as Justin Timberlake climbs 18-9 off the success of his "Suit & Tie" video that bowed on Feb. 14.
The two-year old Social 50 chart ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist pageviews, song plays and reactions.
This is Timberlake's first week in the top 10 after 88 weeks on the list. He jumps after adding over 456,000 fans to his overall fan base (up 2.4% over the previous week). 193,000 of these fans were added on Facebook alone, spurred by a 74% rise in conversation about the artist on the platform.
The views to the "Suit and Tie" official video prompted a 95% rise in weekly video views to Timberlake's VEVO channel, which added 14 million new views during the charting week.
Drake Rises From the Bottom: Drake rises (39-22) this week, coinciding with the debut of the video for his newest single, "Started From the Bottom." Through Feb. 21, it had received 9.7 million views worldwide since its Feb. 13 debut. "Started From the Bottom" is the first single off Drake's forthcoming album, "Nothing Was the Same," due out later this year.
The release helps earn Drake an 8% weekly lift in overall fan base, caused in part by the addition of over 57,000 new fans on Facebook and over 76,000 new followers on Twitter. His Social 50 score is also increased by how active he is on Instagram, where he added 104,000 new followers this week -- an 80% increase over the previous week.
Rihanna's "Stay" Puts Her at No. 1: Rihanna returns to the No. 1 spot on the Social 50 chart, following the debut of the video for her single "Stay," featuring Mikky Ekko. Its clip debuted on Feb. 12, following the duo's performance of the tune on the Feb. 10 Grammy Awards.
She takes the throne with an astounding 23 million views earned by "Stay" during the charting week, adding to over 59 million views received by her VEVO channel during the week (a 25% increase). A 112% increase in reactions on Facebook translates to more than 330,000 new fans on the platform, while on Twitter she adds 121,000.
Burton Bump: Elsewhere on the Social 50, Metallica re-enters at No. 35 as the band commemorated the Feb. 10 birthday of its former bassist Cliff Burton, who died in 1986 when the band's tour bus overturned. Burton was the band's bassist for several of Metallica's formative albums, including "Kill 'Em All," "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets."
"Happy Birthday Cliff. We miss you," the band wrote in a post on its Facebook page that received a staggering 280,000 post-likes, creating a boost in newsfeed impressions that helped Metallica add 185,000 new followers to the platform (a 74% weekly increase).
Back in the top 10, we have Justin Bieber jumping (4-2) along with Taylor Swift (6-3), Britney Spears (8-4) and Bruno Mars (7-6). Beyonce simmers down a few positions (1-5), as does Shakira (3-7), while One Direction bumps up a rung (9-8). Eminem rises to bring up the rear (11-10).
