2006 - An eclectic mix of artists are on display during the sixth annual Jammy Awards at New York's the Theatre at Madison Square Garden. A number of intriguing combinations hit the stage, including rediscovered soul vocalist Bettye LaVette with Blues Traveler, Peter Frampton with Guster and Joe Satriani with former Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins.

2006 - The inaugural Green Apple Music & Arts festival, a four-day music and film event in New York touted as the biggest Earth Day celebration in the United States, gets underway with the sixth annual Jammy Awards and continues through April 23 in 20 venues throughout the city.

2005 - The launch of MTV Networks 100th worldwide channel, MTV base, is celebrated with a concert in Johannesburg headlined by Will Smith and Ludacris. The show also features a lineup of top-notch African talent, including South Africans Lebo Mathosa and Mandoza, as well as Nigeria's Seun Anikyulapo Kuti and Fela's Egypt 80 Band.

2003 - Tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards dies in Los Angeles of cancer. He is 78.

2002 - Alan Dale, a crooner of the late 1940s and '50s whose hits included the million-selling single "Heart of My Heart," dies at the age of 73 after a long illness.

2001 - Italian conductor Giuseppe Sinopoli dies after collapsing at the podium while leading a performance of Verdi's "Aida" at Berlin's Deutsche Oper House. He is 54.

2001 - Embattled Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard pleads guilty in a Queens, N.Y., courtroom to criminal possession of a controlled substance, stemming from a March 1999 crack cocaine arrest in the borough.

2000 - Steven Curtis Chapman tops the 31st annual Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, presented at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. Chapman receives six accolades, including best male vocalist, best pop/contemporary album for "Speechless," and best pop/contemporary recorded song for "Dive."

1999 - Bad Boy Entertainment rapper Mase, 21, announces that he is retiring from music in order to "follow God." In a statement, the rapper says his decision is "effective immediately, and that he will only do speaking engagements to promote his current album "Double Up."

1999 - The Los Angeles Police Department confirms that Death Row Records founder Marion "Suge" Knight is a suspect in the murder of the Notorious B.I.G. The rapper, a Bad Boy/Arista artist, was killed in a drive-by shooting in 1997.

1999 - The "No Security" tour, the Rolling Stones' first arena outing in 20 years wraps with a make-up date at the San Jose Arena in California. The tour grosses more than $64.6 million from only 33 dates.

1996 - Tickets ranging in price from $27.50 - $85.00 go on sale for the KISS reunion tour. This marks the first time in 15 years that all four original members of the '70's rock group join together in original costume and face paint.

1991 - Credence Clearwater Revival founder John Fogerty marries Julie Lebiedzinksi in Bristol, Ind.

1991 - Steve Marriott dies in a fire at his home in Essex, England. Age 44. He was a guitarist and lead singer for the rock bands Small Faces and Humble Pie.

1988 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: ``Where Do Broken Hearts Go,'' Whitney Houston.

1968 - Deep Purple makes its live debut in Denmark. The group's three top 10 albums are ``Machine Head,'' ``Made in Japan'' and ``Burn.''

1964 - The Elvis Presley movie ``Viva Las Vegas'' premieres.

1961 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: ``Runaway,'' Del Shannon. Shannon is the first artist to take a song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney onto the U.S. pop charts. His version of ``From Me to You'' hits the Hot 100 on June 29, 1963, before the release of the Beatles debut American single, ``I Want to Hold Your Hand.''

1951 - Luther Vandross is born in New York City. His biggest pop hit is ``Power of Love/Love Power,'' which hits No. 4 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1991. The album ``Power of Love'' reaches No. 1 on both Billboard's pop and R&B album charts.
