Prosecutors declined to file charges yesterday (March 27) against the former lead singer of disbanded rock Mest in the fatal Los Angeles stabbing of a man during an argument.

Anthony Lovato, 26, was arrested early Sunday after calling police to report the altercation, authorities said. "There was insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the killing was not a justified use of force in self-defense," said a district attorney's office spokesperson.

Authorities said Lovato and the 25-year-old man argued early Sunday in a parking structure. When police arrived, they found the man lying on the ground with knife wounds. He later died at the hospital.

Lovato and the man had been involved with the same woman at different times, and police had been called to her apartment Saturday night when the two men fought, but no one was arrested at the time.

Lovato and his brother Matt formed Mest in 1995, and recorded several albums for Madonna's Maverick label before breaking up last year.
