En route to this weekend's Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee, Scottish rock act Franz Ferdinand made a pit stop at New York's Bowery Ballroom last night (June 13), treating the sold-out crowd to an hour-long, 14-song set featuring five new tunes.
The new songs showed a synthy side of the quartet that at times recalled Devo, with "Anyone In Love" and "Turn It On" receiving the warmest reception.
Fan favorites "Take Me Out," "Dark of the Matinee" and "Michael" were also enthusiastically received, as fans brought long-stemmed red roses to give to lead singer Alex Kapranos and guitarist Nick McCarthy between songs. Those same fans rushed the stage during the third encore, "Outsiders," attempting to sing back up.
Surprisingly, no bouncers or roadies interfered, much to the confusion of McCarthy, as he continued to play the tune. The band quickly exited the stage when it was done, ending with an extended drum part closing out the song.
Currently, Franz Ferdinand has no other summer dates planned, as the band plans to continue working on new material with an eye on releasing its next album before the end of the year.
Here is Franz Ferdinand's set list:
"Anyone in Love"
"Shopping for Blood"
"Dark of the Matinee"
"An English Goodbye"
"Take Me Out"
"A New Thrill"
"Turn It On"
