Rock act Aiden has been selected by MTV2 "Book the Band" viewers to perform at Baltimore's Virgin Festival, set for Aug. 4-5 at Pimlico Race Course. The Seattle-based band will open day two of the festival.
Aiden received nearly 420,000 online and text votes as part of Virgin Mobile's "Book the Band" contest, which aired on MTV2 between June 15 and July 20. The contest was a partnership between Virgin Mobile USA, MTV2 and Kyocera Wireless.
Weekly segments of the short-form program were featured on the MTV2's "T-Minus Rock" and "Subterranean" programs. Along with Aiden, the segments featured profiles of up-and-coming rock acts Cold War Kids, the Higher, Mute Math and Say Anything. At the end of each episode, viewers were directed to virginfestival.com, where they voted for their favorite act.
Episodes also appeared on MTV2's "Saturday Rock" series, with additional content -- including MP3s and tour dates -- featured on the Virgin Festival Web site.
More than 1,000,000 votes were submitted via online and text message during the seven-week voting period, according to organizers.
The bill for the second-year Virgin Festival includes the Police, the Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, Modest Mouse, Velvet Revolver, Wu-Tang Clan, CSS, the Fratellis, Amy Winehouse, M.I.A., Paolo Nutini, the Crystal Method, 311, Incubus, Chris Cornell, Spoon, Girl Talk, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio, Bad Brains and Fountains Of Wayne, among others.
