Syco Music/Sony BMG vocalist Leona Lewis continued her reign over the U.K. sales charts yesterday as her debut, "Spirit," started a second week as Britain's best-selling album and "Bleeding Love" headed up the singles survey for a fifth straight week.
Another Sony BMG act, the S label's Westlife, rebounded 3-2 on the album chart with the title that ceded No. 1 to Lewis two weeks ago, "Back Home." Classical crossover singer Katherine Jenkins entered at No. 3 with "Rejoice" (UCJ). The Welsh vocalist has now reached the U.K. top five with three albums in a row, but the new release is the first to make the top three. Notably, Jenkins also outsold pop regulars Girls Aloud's new "Tangled Up" (Fascination/Polydor), which opened at No. 4. Led Zeppelin's "Mothership" compilation (Atlantic) slipped a place to No. 5.
The UCJ label also achieved a No. 11 entry with the Fron Male Voice Choir's "Voices of the Valley -- Encore," which charted three places ahead of Alicia Keys' "As I Am" (J). Lee Mead, winner of the BBC's TV talent series "Any Dream Will Do" and subsequent male lead in the London production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," entered at No. 16 with his self-titled debut set for Rug/Fascination/Polydor.
On the singles chart, "Bleeding Love" is unbeatable for a fifth week, its latest challenger being T2 & Jodie's "Heartbroken" (All Around the World). That track climbed 14-2 to provide yet another success for the independent north of England dance label.
The two new entries in the top 10 of the singles chart were "Breathless" by Lewis' predecessor as a winner of ITV's "The X-Factor," Syco Music labelmate Shayne Ward. That came in at No. 6, while Girls Aloud's latest single "Call the Shots," opened at No. 9.
The physical release of the Spice Girls' reunion single "Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)" (Virgin) helped it rebound to No. 11 after last week dipping 20-23 on digital sales. But the track is in danger of missing the top 10 despite massive publicity and its status as the BBC's official single of its recent Children In Need 2007 telethon, The Girls' "Greatest Hits" album fell 2-7 on yesterday's new chart. Meanwhile, RCA's latest Elvis Presley single reissue, "Always on My Mind," took its place in the top 20 at No. 17.
There are new leaders on both of Billboard's pan-European sales charts, as Celine Dion's "Taking Chances" (Columbia) debuted at No. 1 on Top 100 Albums and "Apologize" (Mosley/Blackground/Interscope) by Timbaland presents OneRepublic moved 5-1 on the Eurochart Top 100 Singles tally.
