The 10-song set, due April 29 via Warp, finds Lidell continuing to draw on a '60s-rooted psychedelic-soul aesthetic, although "Jim" is more pop friendly a la Amy Winehouse. Guests include Peaches, Nikka Costa and percussionist Alex Acuna.
"I needed to step outside of Berlin and L.A. provided a nice backdrop for stepping up the pressure a bit," Lidell tells Billboard.com. "I think that's why it has a rhythmic intention, or sensibility. We tracked a lot there, and let sunshine in a bit."
Los Angeles was the recording home for seven of the 10 tracks; the other three were done in Paris and the vocals tracked in Berlin. Lidell also reunited with Mocky and Gonzalez, who he previously worked with on 2005's "Multiply," for songwriting and production.
"There was a rigorous method that we went for, [but still] the all tried and tested method, where you write it on the guitar and the piano," he says. "So Mocky and I would sit around in Berlin and flesh out melodies and bridges until we had it. We'd move on after we thought we had good, strong arrangements."
And as for the curious title, Lidell explains it's in reference to his alter-ego. "Jim Shady," he jokes. "It's the warm, generous side of Jamie."
Lidell is currently in New York rehearsing for a spring tour.
Here is the track list for "Jim":
"Wait For Me"
"Out Of My System"
"All I Wanna Do"
"Little Bit Of Feelgood"
"Figured Me Out"
"Where Do You Go"
"Rope Of Sand"
