After postponing Monday's gig at New York's Hiro Ballroom, the She & Him duo of actress Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward kicked off a short tour last night (April 22) at the city's Webster Hall.
Accompanied by a three-piece backing band, She & Him blazed through a 13-song set that lasted nearly an hour, interspersing a few covers into the mix.
It was evident that Deschanel had lost her voice, as she used cue-card-esque pieces of paper to communicate with the audience (the first one read, "You guys look great, really you do"). Despite that minor setback, her voice sounded crystal clear while performing, successfully emulating the throwback soul-pop vibe of the group's recent Merge album, "Volume One."
For the first few songs, Deschanel stood rather motionless. It wasn't until Ward and her were left alone for the first time that they brought the audience to a roar during "You Really Got a Hold on Me."
Deschanel took to the piano for a few tunes, sitting down for "Take It Back" and "I Thought I Saw Your Face Today," the latter with a full-band arrangement. The group's cover of the Carole King/Gerry Coffin tune "Oh No! Not My Baby" proved the evening's highlight, with Ward stepping out of the shadows to showcase his guitar skills.
She & Him continues its tour tonight at New York University, followed by an appearance at L.A.'s Vista Theater on April 29 and at San Francisco's Oysterfest on May 18.
