Frank Zappa concert becomes a 2-CD live album, Trey Anastasio leads additions to Newport Folk Fest lineup, and Joseph Arthur releases ongoing free album project.

Frank Zappa Concert Becomes 2-CD Live Album

A previously unreleased 1972 concert is the latest release from the Frank Zappa archives to see the light of day. "Wazoo," a two-disc set documenting Zappa's Sept. 24, 1972 show at the Boston Music Hall, will be released on May 27 via Vaulternative Records, a label run by the Zappa Family Trust.

"Wazoo" is the third concert release from the Trust, which is headed by Zappa's widow Gail.

The show marks the final performance by Zappa's 20-piece "Grand Wazoo/Hot Rats/Mothers of Invention" band. The set includes liner notes by Wazoo member Malcolm McNab and Gail Zappa, as well as photos from the era. It also marks the 35th anniversary of Zappa's studio album "The Grand Wazoo." The album will be available at Zappa.com.

Trey Anastasio leads additions to Newport Folk Fest Lineup

The Newport Folk Festival has announced the additions of Trey Anastasio, Richie Havens and Son Volt to its 2008 lineup.

This year marks Anastasio's first appearance at the fest and Havens' second. Havens previously performed at Newport 17 years ago.

The Aug. 1 - 3, 2008 fest, which takes place at the Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI, is headed up by Jimmy Buffett, the Black Crowes, My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Levon Helm and Cat Power.

Newport will be a rare performance for Anastasio, who has only played a handful of times since his 2006 DUI arrest. He most recently took the stage last night (May 7) at the Jammy Awards in New York. Anastasio's new live album, "Original Boardwalk Style," will be released May 13 on his Rubber Jungle Records.

Joseph Arthur Releases Free Ongoing Album Project

It's a good week for free albums. Following Nine Inch Nails's release of "The Slip" via their official site on Monday, singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur is releasing his project "Bag Is Hot" via his Tumblr site, josepharthur.tumblr.com.

Billed as a "free, ongoing, living record that will last forever," "Bag Is Hot" currently comprises 11 tracks with more to be added on an ongoing basis. "'Bag is hot'…like fresh popcorn for all the kids to grab," Arthur said in a press release. "Digital hands eating the digital popcorn."

Arthur this year also plans to release the EP's "Vagabond Skies" (June 10) and "Foreign Girls" (July 8). A full-length, "Temporary People," is due Sept. 16. Arthur will spend most of June on tour in the United Kingdom; he returns to the United States in July.
