Emerging Irish pop-rock band the Script scored an instant U.K. No. 1 with its self-titled debut album for Phonogenic/Sony BMG yesterday (Aug. 17), while Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" (Virgin/EMI) started a second week atop the singles survey.
The Script, a trio from Dublin, had a No. 15 hit in May with "We Cry"; its follow-up, "The Man Who Can't Be Moved," climbed 4-3 on the new singles chart as the album made its chart-topping arrival. "We Cry" celebrated by rebounding 55-33.
"The Script" deposed ABBA's "Gold -- Greatest Hits" (Polydor/Universal) from the top spot, as the 1992 compilation dipped to No. 2. Next to arrive on the album chart was London breakthrough band Noah and the Whale, who followed its first big hit "5 Years Time" (down 7-9 this week) with a No. 5 debut for its first album, "Peaceful The World Lays Me Down" (Vertigo/Universal). British easy listening singer Jane McDonald's "Jane" (JMD) entered at No. 7.
Perry's run at the top of the singles chart continued as its predecessor at No. 1, Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" (Atlantic), held at No. 2. The Verve's "Love Is Noise" (Parlophone/EMI) rose 5-4, and the one top 10 debut of the week was Norwegian hip-hop outfit Madcon's European hit version of the Four Seasons song "Beggin" (RCA/Sony BMG) at No. 8.
The dance update has already topped the chart in Norway and gone top 10 in Germany. The Seasons' original was a top 20 U.S. hit in 1967 but was beaten to the U.K. top 40 the following year by British group Timebox. A club remix of the Seasons' recording reached No. 32 in the U.K. in July last year.
Coldplay's former No. 1 single "Viva La Vida" (Parlophone/EMI) climbed back 14-10, while Norwegian new wave rock artist Ida Maria's "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked" (RCA/Sony BMG) rose again 15-13. Bloc Party scored its 11th top 40 hit in just over four years with the new track "Mercury" (Wichita) at No. 16 and "Body on Me" (Universal Island) by Nelly featuring Akon & Ashanti climbed 23-17.
In a double for EMI labels on Billboard's pan-European charts, the Coldplay set begins an eighth week at No. 1 on Top 100 Albums and Perry's hit races 8-1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.
