David Guetta, Akon and Ne-Yo will be hitting the MGM Grand Garden Arena stage in Las Vegas tonight at the Billboard Music Awards, airing live on ABC, to perform their thumping new track "Play Hard."
Backstage at rehearsals, Akon told Billboard how this current collaboration -- which yielded a recently released (and hilarious) video -- came to be.
"He literally reached out and went 'Akon I've got this record, you've gotta hear it, I got Ne-Yo already on the chorus. All I need is for you break these verses off. C'mon please you gotta come by the studio!'" he recalled. "And of course I came by and heard it and of course it was amazing. and really fun. it was a fun type of record, you know."
Other collaborations tipped for the show are Christina Aguilera, Pitbull and a special surprise guest, with "Feel This Moment"; Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez, on "Live It Up"; Will.I.Am with Justin Bieber on "The Power"; and Nicki Minaj with Lil Wayne, on "High School."
Meanwhile, Akon also gave an update on his upcoming fourth studio album, "Stadium," to be released in June, as well as his plans to branch out into Hollywood.
"My main focus has been my album. I'm packaging that, getting that ready for release," he said. "And I'm slowly merging into the film side of things. So I'm really excited about that, I get to cross over from the music side into Hollywood. So I'll be scoring some films, acting in some films, producing some films… So far it's feeling really good."
