Rihanna turns to Hinduism for inspiration in her new "Where Have You Been" video -- references to symbolism and deities from the world's oldest living religion are rampant throughout the pop clip.
The sexy video has Rihanna emerging from a lake in a barely-there scale bikini, cut with footage of her singing topless in a room lit with little lights -- the perfect opportunity to show off her tattoos, one of which is written in Hindu Sanskrit. She and a group of shirtless back-up dancers move with choreographed precision as the pop star dons fashion's take on Middle Eastern clothing: a revealing zebra-print top, hot pink harem pants and a colorful turban/headscarf.
As the choreography continues and the scene changes, more traditional dance moves are blended with Rihanna's pop style. The video takes a cue from "We Found Love," as the images are mirrored and distorted, replicating Rihanna's body and giving her multiple flowing arms, until she looks like a Hindu deity. "Where Have You Been" closes as Rihanna and her dancers are submerged back into the lake from which they first rose four minutes earlier.
The Dr. Luke, Calvin Harris and Cirkut-produced track was set as Rihanna's fifth "Talk That Talk" single earlier this month. It debuted at No. 36 on the Pop Songs chart last week with 152,000 downloads sold to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Birthday Cake," Rihanna's fourth single and collab with Chris Brown, has reached No. 2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart with 496,000 downloads sold.
