The Juice Podcast: Jennifer Hudson Interview, Nick Hakim Performance & 'Brandy' 20-Year Anniversary
On this week's episode of The Juice Podcast, Billboard's associate editor Steven Horowitz and I discuss the current state of R&B including new artists (Daniel Caesar, Nick Hakim), upcoming releases (Jennifer Hudson’s JHUD, Keyshia Cole's Point Of No Return) and the difference between R&B from the U.K. and the U.S.
We spoke to Jennifer Hudson in time for the release of her third album, JHUD, during which she shares the motive behind the album's dance feel: "It's definitely a dancier sound. It’s the upbeat side of me. It has really good energy on it," she shares, "I wanted to bridge old school with the new school." Listen to the full snippet of the interview on this week's episode of The Juice Podcast, below.
Before we touch on upcoming R&B releases, we spotlight new artist, Nick Hakim. The epsiode is laced with a preview of the singer-songwriter's live performance of "The Want," which he performed, along with "Cold," when he stopped by Billboard’s NYC office earlier this week.
In celebration of the 20-year anniversary of Brandy’s self-titled debut, Horowitz and I discuss the album's impact and Brandy’s sonic evolution.
Of course, we veer from the theme of this week’s podcast episode and close by covering Kendrick Lamar's new single, "i."
