NBC's "Saturday Night Live" provides a huge stage and opportunity for artists of usually high wattage to perform. So when the show-runners announced that relative unknown and newbie UK vocalist Sam Smith would take the stage on March 29, many were left scratching their heads. "Who?"

Sam Smith Readies Debut Album About 'Unrequited Love & Loneliness'

Well, Smith--a soulful crooner whose biggest hit single comes via featured appearance on duo Disclosure's 2012 jam "Latch"--made the most of his opportunity last night. When host, comedian Louis C.K., first introduced Smith, he performed "Stay With Me."

With a pianist and string player, Smith followed with yet another loving cut, "Lay Me Down."
